چکیده

Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase activity and cell surface markers were measured in peripheral bymphoid cells from 27 children with acute bymphobbastic leukemia in various phases of their disease. Lymphoblasts from un treated patients had smooth surface ultrastructure but heter ogeneous surface receptors. Greater than 60% of bympho blasts from 4 of 7 untreated patients formed rosettes with sheep red blood cells. Transferase activity was variable, ranging from 8 to 210 units/10@blasts, but it was consist ently elevated at diagnosis and in relapse. Transfemase 1ev els did not correlate with the presence of lymphoblast sun face receptors. During induction therapy transferase activ ity decreased rapidly, but it remained elevated in peripheral lymphoid cells even when blasts were not detectable in the peripheral blood smears. Patients in remission had normal surface receptors and undetectable or minimally elevated bevelsof transferase. Terminal transferase activity may be a sensitive biochemical marker for a primitive cell population and may be important in the evaluation of therapeutic effec tiveness in acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Function of Neutrophils in Different Phases of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia

In chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), the mature granulocytes originate from a stem cell line harboring an abnormal chromosome, therefore it is possible that metabolic-functional abnormalities occur in the morphologically mature cells. In the present study, the phagocytic activity including intracellular killing, nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction, and phagocytosis were studied in 37 CML p...

Diagnosis of B-CLL Leukemia Using Fractal Dimension

Background:Leukemia is cancer of blood and bone marrow cells. In general, there are four types of leukemia: chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).  Fractal geometry can be introduced as one of the effective ways to detect this type of cancer. In this study, with introduc...

Chronic myelogenous leukemia presenting in the blastic phase and its association with a 45 XO Ph1 karyotype.

A 58-yr-old male patient presented in the blastic phase of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Cytogenetic studies revealed a 45 XO Ph1 chromosome pattern in bone marrow cells during a short remission and again in the blastic phase of the disease. The patient expired 8 mo following diagnosis. The blastic phase of CML can stimulate acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) clinically and hematologically;...

Pregnancy Outcome of Two Patients with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia Treated with Imatinib

Although chronic myelogenous leukemia in pregnancy is rare, its management and treatment is more difficult and complicated.Treatment of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia includes bone marrow transplantation, however in less than 30% of patients the donor’s organ would be accepted. To this end, cytotoxic therapy is considered as an alternative therapeutic option. This option provides sa...

DETERMINATION OF A SHARED EPITOPE ON CELLS FROM ACUTE MYELOGENIC LEUKEMIA (AML) AND T-ACUTE LYMPHOBLASTIC LEUKEMIA ( T-ALL)

Two IgM monoclonal antibodies (MAb) with strong reactivity for granulocytes and to a lesser extent for lurkat cell lines were established by immunizing BALBI c mice with a histiocytic cell line (UY37). These two MAbs (designated as 6C9 and 4C4) reacted with blast cells of T-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) patients as well as leukemic cells from pat...
